Dr. Samuel Courtney is elected to the Boston School Committee.

Courtney (R), a graduate of Harvard Medical School, becomes the second African-American elected to the Boston School Committee. Elected to a one-year term, he is reelect to a three-year term in 1896 and becomes the last African-American to serve on the School Committee until 1977.*
